This research looked at the possibility to differentiate benign and malignant human skin pathologies by the use of Monte Carlo simulations and chromophore mapping. The spectral range used was 450 nm – 950 nm. Literature review was conducted to gain a better understanding about the structure and properties of different human skin pathologies. Literature on the mapping of skin chromophores and the use of Monte Carlo method was also reviewed. Algorithms for conducting Monte Carlo simulations and the mapping of skin chromophores were created. Based on existing literature, a skin model for Monte Carlo simulations was created to study the effect that different optical properties leave to the resulting simulated absorption spectra. 50 different skin pathologies were analyzed with the created chromophore mapping algorithm. To differentiate benign and malignant skin pathologies, an inverse Monte Carlo approach was proposed, and two different coefficients that use the resulting data of the mapping of skin chromophores were proposed. The results of this research show the possibility to differentiate benign and malignant human skin pathologies by the use of Monte Carlo simulations and chromophore mapping.
