The bachelor work is devoted to epidemiological study designs. They are usually used in medicine, biology, social health study and other fields. The work describes the study division according to the way of research: observational or experimental ones, which in their turn are divided into sub-designs. The observational ones are subdivided into case-control, cohort and cross-sectional studies; the experimental ones include quasi-experimental studies and randomized controlled trials. Advantages and disadvantages of each design are presented in the work as well as corresponding statistical calculations. Definitions of key concepts in epidemiological science are also provided, as well as formulas for commonly used calculations such as relative risk and odds ratio. In addition to the choice of the corresponding design, for successful study planning it is important to calculate the necessary sample size, therefore the work contains the sample size and power determination formulas, based on the planned hypothesis test. In the practical part of the work two real-life data samples, based on the Latvian and Lithuanian diabetes patient data are described and analyzed. In addition, some simulating data are applied for the illustration of the work of the matching method. The statistical software program R has been used for calculation conduction and the code is included in the appendix.
